How long has Monarch been operating scheduled flights?

Over 44 years. We've got more experience than almost any of the other 'low cost' operators - no wonder we do things differently!

Here are some of the 'milestones' in the history of our scheduled business:

1986

Monarch's scheduled services are airborne. The Civil Aviation Authority awards us licences to three top Spanish resorts flying the Boeing 737. Demand exceeds all expectations.

1993

Monarch abandons the traditional restrictions of minimum and maximum stays on round-trip tickets. Instead, we offer a unique system of one-way fares. Round-trip fares are simply calculated by adding together the cost of the outward bound and inbound journeys. The combined fares are often lower than round-trip fares on many other scheduled airlines. Plus, they give travellers far more flexibility.

2002

Monarch introduces two new routes and a new destination in the summer: you can now fly to Faro from London Luton or Manchester.

2003

In the summer, Monarch inaugurates its first flight from Manchester to Palma de Mallorca, as well as doubling frequency on its Alicante, Faro and Malaga routes from Manchester. In the winter season, further inaugurations celebrate the first flights to Barcelona, Gibraltar and Tenerife from Manchester.

2004

Monarch introduces two new routes to Gran Canaria and Lanzarote in the Canary Islands. Flights commence at the start of the winter season.

2005

Birmingham International Airport becomes Monarch's fourth UK base with flights to Alicante, Faro, Malaga, and Tenerife. We also reconfigured our scheduled service fleet to include 48 extra legroom seats per aircraft, boasting an impressive 34" of legroom at a cost of £15 per sector (£20 on Canaries' flights).

2006

Monarch doubles capacity at Birmingham with the introduction of flights to Murcia, Almeria, Palma and Menorca. A new service between Manchester and Menorca commences in March, with other new services between Tenerife and London Gatwick and Manchester to Lanzarote starting in October.

2007

New routes are launched to Larnaca and Almeria from Luton, Murcia from Gatwick and a new service to Ibiza from all four UK airports. Increased frequencies across many scheduled services also take effect for the summer season.

2008

The addition of three new Airbus A321 aircraft into the scheduled fleet enable Monarch to expand its operation into the Eastern Med with services from both Manchester and Gatwick to Cyprus (Larnaca), as well as new flights to Murcia from Manchester and Menorca from Gatwick.

2010

New scheduled destinations to Turkey are launched, taking advantage of the Eastern Mediterranean's surge in popularity. Nine flights per week to Bodrum, Antalya and Dalaman allow access to the beauty and culture of the Aegean, Mediterranean and Turquoise Coasts.

2011

New scheduled year-round flights are launched to Egypt’s Red Sea resort of Sharm el Sheikh. The new route adds further support our shift to focusing on scheduled flying.

2012

Fourteen new scheduled flights are launched to the beautiful Italian cities of Milan, Rome, Verona and Venice as well as the cosmopolitan Croatian city of Dubrovnik and the largest of the Greek Islands, Crete.

A total of twelve new routes, including our first programme of scheduled ski flights are launched for winter 2012/13 with scheduled flights from Leeds Bradford International Airport for the first time.

East Midlands airport is launched as the fifth UK base for the airline.
