More DealsGran Canaria: Introduction
Gran Canaria is the third largest of the Canary Islands – the archipelago just off the African Coast. It’s the ideal destination if fantastic weather, good food and a lively nightlife are high on your list of priorities. The island enjoys virtually 360 days of sunshine, so it’s popular with holiday-makers right through the year. It’s also the ideal place to spend a week if you need a mid-winter pick-me-up.
The scenery of Gran Canaria is stunning, and a drive across the island will take you through arid, rocky desert, to the luscious greenery that surrounds the mountains. So even if you’re not that keen on sand and sea, it’s definitely worth hiring a car and doing a bit of exploring with a picnic and a good camera.
Most people who book tickets to Gran Canaria do so for one reason, and that’s to soak up the glorious sunshine on one of Gran Canaria’s many white sandy beaches. It’s a great place to recharge the batteries and enjoy a wide range of cuisines – from local Canarian to Mediterranean, as well as world foods like Indian and Chinese. And, of course, if you’re really missing home, you’re bound to find somewhere serving a Full English in the morning!
If you fancy doing a spot of shopping or feel like strolling around a museum, then head to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It’s a bustling, cosmopolitan town with plenty to offer the avid shopper, and lots of little cafes where you can stop for a cool drink.
Cheap flights to Las Palmas airport, which is the starting point for all holidays to the island, are available from Manchester and Birmingham.

Went to the Botanical Gardens, well worth a visit and also to the museum in Las Palmas.Went to the Botanical Gardens, well worth a visit and also to the museum in Las Palmas but must say it was difficult to find. We also went up to Galder, a lovely little town in the mountains. Also visited Porto Morgan and went to the Irish restaurant and had John Dory - the best meal we had. The Don Quitox restaruant in the harbour area of Porto Rico is well worth a visit, it was fully booked every night we were there so it must be good! Always hire a car if possible as there are so many lovely towns in the mountains. Try not to be too scared of driving on the winding roads although the local buses seems to go anywhere you wish to visit. - Madeline Napper
