Attractions and activities in the Canary Islands

Holidays to the Canary Islands are all about exploring the rugged beauty of the area - with some fantastic spots for beach days. Attractions and activities in the Canary Islands all depend on which island you choose as your base. Tenerife is the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, known for its endless sunshine, sea and sporty fun. The island is dominated by Mount Teide, which is among the world’s largest volcanoes, at over 7,500m high. It’s an island of two halves, with the diverse, tropical north and the rocky south. From beaches and watersports to the natural beauty of Loro Parque, Tenerife’s plethora of activities makes it a popular holiday destination every year.

Gran Canaria, another of the larger islands, is a golfer’s paradise, with great courses at Maspalomas, the home of international golf events, amazing views at Salobre Golf and sea facing beauty at Meloneras Golf. The sunshine means you're pretty certain to be able to play every day - with challenging modern courses. For family holidays in Gran Canaria, explore the natural beauty of the island at Palmitos Park, home to 150 species of birds, a butterfly house, aquarium and gibbon island - a wonderful oasis of natural beauty. Just two miles north of Maspalomas is the biggest water park in the Canary Islands, with around 50 flumes, rides and even a minigolf site.

And, of course, there’s Fuerteventura. Fuerteventura holidays are all about beaches – miles and miles of beautiful beaches. Corralejo boasts some excellent spots: Grandes Playas, Olivia beach, Waikiki beach, Glass beach, small harbour beach, and Flag beach and sand dunes. Costa Caleta boasts a man-made beach and Las Solinas beach. If you’re looking for a day trip, head out to Los Lobos island by boat. This tiny volcano tipped island is absolutely beautiful, with a nature reserve, wildlife and beautiful sea birds, you can easily lose yourself in the island’s natural beauty.

Lanzarote is another great choice for families. The Cueva de los Verdes, in north Lanzarote, are among the island’s best sights. You can take a guided tour of these ghostly tunnels, and discover their 5,000 year old history. As well as its many beaches and hidden coves, such as Jabillo Beach, Lanzarote is also home to some interesting cultural attractions. For a day trip, the town of Teguise, founded in the 15th century, is beautiful. This town has a fun market on Sundays, and treelined plazas for watching the world go by.
