Lanzarote: Introduction

Lanzarote, the easternmost Canary Island, is found within an amazing volcanic landscape, with rugged terrain and deep craters. It’s the place to come for adventure; the Timanfaya National Park and striking Green Caves are just waiting to be explored, and the island’s rich natural history pro-vides a wonderful backdrop for holidays to Lanzarote.

Lanzarote is in the Canary Islands and is certainly one of the jewels in the archipelago's crown, be-ing home to a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, as well as 12 natural protected areas, a national park and a marine reserve. Thanks to the late artist Cesar Manarique, who devoted much of his life to protecting Lanzarote’s natural beauty from tourism, the island remains intact, without high-rise build-ings and jarring modern resorts. Each of the island's resorts has its own charming personality and offers a choice of cheap package holidays to Lanzarote.

Perfect mix of resorts

Holidays to Lanzarote come in all shapes and sizes; Puerto del Carmen is the oldest resort on the island, with everything from budget hotels to incredible luxury villas, and is only a 10-minute drive from Arrecife Airport. Puerto del Carmen stretches over 6km of golden sand, with an array of op-tions for the active traveller, including diving, snorkelling and windsurfing. For a stretch of natural beauty, Puerto Calero, on the southwest coast of the island, is an exclusive resort with an easy, re-laxed pace. This resort is a fish lover’s dream; you can try the catch of the day at one of their many waterside restaurants, and even try your hand at fishing for blue-fin tuna.

Playa Blanca, in the southern tip of island, is a great holiday spot for kids - it has sheltered bays, sunny restaurants and a sense of peace. Lanzarote offers holiday-goers a heady mix of sunshine, adventure and night life; whether it’s diving in the crystal-clear waters or having fun with all the family on the beach.

• Lanzarote is the perfect year-round destination, with highs of 21°C in January and only 5.5 inches of rainfall a year.

• Don’t be scared of taking a day away from the island – take the boat over to the island of La Graciosa for a glorious day swimming in crystal clear water and perfect sunshine.

Attractions and Activities

The Cueva de los Verdes, in north Lanzarote, are one of the island’s best sights; you can take a guided tour of these ghostly tunnels, and discover their 5,000 year-old history. You can’t miss the beaches either – Jameos del Agua is great for advanced watersports, and Costa Teguise for all the family. Visit Cesar Manrique’s home, built into the boulders, which is dedicated to his work – there’s an exhibition space with his contemporaries, including Picasso, and the centre is a great introduc-tion to his work. For nature lovers, visiting Timanfaya National Park is a must. At the summit, there is a restaurant designed by César Manrique, as well as a camel safari park, amazing rock for-mations and views of Islote de Hilario volcano. La Graciosa is a small island in the north of Lanza-rote, which is great for cycling and hiking, as it has no roads!

For a day trip, the town of Teguise, founded in the 15th century, is beautiful. This town has a fun market on Sundays, and tree-lined plazas which are perfect for watching the world go by. If you’re looking for something more dramatic, Famara, in the north-west, is the place for come for water-sports. It’s a surfers’ paradise, with surfing, windsurfing and kiteboarding all on offer at their beauti-ful beach.

There are plenty of traditional religious festivals throughout the year in Lanzarote. From Día de Re-yes in January, which celebrates Christmas with the Kings’ Cake and a procession in Arrecife, to the carnival in February, where thousands flock to the streets for special street parades, dancing and song, which dates back to Pagan times. Every year in June, the Ironman triathlon competition is held in Lanzarote, where hundreds of athletes complete a gruelling physical day of running, swimming and cycling around the island. In October, Lanzarote hosts the Visual Music Festival with exceptional concerts in unique venues around the city, including the volcanic caves of Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes. Of course, Christmas celebrations are huge in Lanzarote; the night before, many people attend Misa del Gallo (midnight mass) in the island’s churches, and enjoy a large family feast on Christmas Day.

Getting Around

The most convenient mode of transport in Lanzarote is renting a car; many car hire companies op-erate on the island, and you’ll always find a good rate online. From the airport, there’s a public bus service, although the route is limited and may not travel to your resort. There are many public buses on the island, for hopping on and off, and taxis are a relatively cheap way of exploring the island - most resorts have taxi ranks, just look for the green light!
