Tenerife: perfect for all kinds of holidays

Tenerife is a fantastic all-round destination that caters just as well for groups of friends as it does for families and couples. The isle is a well-known holiday hotspot in the Canary Islands, a stunning archipelago that's part of Spain, despite being located off the north coast of Africa.

As a result of their location, all the isles - but especially Tenerife - experience wonderful weather all year round. Temperatures range between 17 degrees C in the winter and 25 degrees C in the summer, with the island receiving more than 2,500 hours of sunshine per year.

So, no matter when you book your holiday to Tenerife for, you can look forward to warm and predominantly sunny weather. The island has much more going for it than just an excellent climate though, with plenty of stunning natural attractions, outstanding resorts and fun activities to enjoy.

Top resorts in Tenerife

When you book flights to Tenerife, you'll usually be flying into the island's south airport, as this is close to many of its best known resorts. As a general rule, the north of Tenerife is a bit less developed and is where you'll find the most authentic villages and towns. This typically means the latter is better suited to couples than to families or large groups of friends.

Here's a bit more information about what to expect in a few of Tenerife's most popular resorts:

Playa de las Americas - This is one of the best known resorts, with its collection of fantastic hotels just a stone's throw from beautiful golden sands and clear seas. Most of the hotels have their own swimming pools, while the resort itself boasts numerous restaurants, bars and clubs. It has a reputation for its lively nightlife, as well as for the host of activities available. Playa de las Americas really does have something for everyone, with lots for families and young children by day, and bustling bars and clubs for the 20-somethings by night.

Costa Adeje - This is one of Tenerife's newest resorts and, although it's not far from Playa de las Americas, the atmosphere is quite different. It tends to be much quieter and is therefore ideal for couples seeking a romantic holiday. It's close to the peaceful and stunning golden sands of Playa del Duque, but still near enough to Playa de las Americas that you can take advantage of its facilities when you're staying in Costa Adeje.

Los Cristianos  - A firm favourite with families, Los Cristianos is a charming resort that developed around a fishing village. You can still see evidence of its roots near the harbour, while the sandy beach and sheltered bay are ideal for families with small children.

Activities and attractions in Tenerife

Tenerife is bursting with a vast array of things to see and do, which is yet another reason why you should consider it for your next getaway. Its gorgeous beaches are one of the most obvious natural attractions, but they are not the most unusual - the strange volcanic landscapes in Teide National Park deserve that title, while the mountain from which the reserve takes its name provides excellent, yet challenging, hiking.

Any holiday in Tenerife would not be complete without trying at least one water sport, with the likes of surfing, scuba diving, windsurfing and sailing among those on offer. For a more sedate day out - and one that's perfect for kids - go whale or dolphin watching on an organised boat tour.

Land-based pursuits include cycling, hiking, tennis, golf, climbing and horse riding, not to mention that there are numerous theme and leisure parks dotted all over the island that will provide plenty to keep adults and children alike occupied.
