Tenerife is the biggest Canary Island of all seven and has long been a hotspot for holiday goers due to the wide variety of experiences it has to offer. It is also home to the highest mountain throughout the whole of Spain, the El Teide Volcano (which is still active!) and for those who decide to visit this little bit of paradise, no two days are the same.
There are numerous flights departing for the island each week, with the journey from London typically taking around four hours. If you book flights to Tenerife from a northern airport, like Manchester, you should expect the trip to take about four hours and twenty minutes.
Why choose Tenerife?
Tenerife is a holiday destination loved by all age ranges as there is something for everyone to enjoy. The island’s scenery is stunning with its spectacular cliffs and forests, as well as its rock formations and, of course, volcanic peaks, which all make for a fun day of exploration. Tenerife is also a culinary capital with a typical diet consisting of healthy, delicious grilled meat, fish and vegetables. For those who enjoy a lively night out, Tenerife is the perfect place to go with the island offering a plethora of nightclubs, bars and discos to whet everyone’s appetites. There really is something for everyone on this island.
Let’s go to the beach
There is nothing better than grabbing your beach bag, throwing on some sunscreen and heading down to the beach to bask in the sun while taking the time to dip your toes in the sea and for this reason, Tenerife’s beaches, with their stunning ocean views, are without doubt one of the island’s best features.
It’s no real surprise that the beaches in Tenerife are second to none given that a lot of money has been invested to turn the once rocky coastline made up of natural, volcanic, black sand into the golden wonders of today.
The southern coast is really where Tenerife’s best beaches lie, with Playa de Las Vistas and Playa de Las Americas being just a number of the highlights with several southern beaches having been awarded the European Blue Flag due to their cleanliness.
Medano on Tenerife’s south-west coast is perfect for the adventurous type who love to partake in water sports, with surfing being a particularly popular pastime. If sports are the last thing on your mind while holidays, Medano beach is great as it is actually split into two zones, meaning that you can relax and sunbathe if you wish to.
Under the sea
If you fancy something a little different while in Tenerife, then taking the chance to explore the wonderful sea life is highly recommended. There are a number of companies which offer a selection of diving and snorkeling experiences.
You can also get up close and personal with the whales and dolphins which inhabit the island’s surrounding waters and throughout any time of the year you might be able to spot species including bottlenose dolphins, sperm whales and pilot whales.
Visit the capital
Santa Cruz de Tenerife (or Santa Cruz as it is commonly known as) is the capital of the Canary Islands and is the perfect place to visit if a day out is what you’re after.
There is a plethora of attractions including Plaza de España, which is the largest square on the island and has a beautiful artificial lake which is a must-see.
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción (Church of the Immaculate Conception) is well worth a visit also.
One of the greatest things about going abroad is trying another culture’s culinary offerings and Tenerife is no exception.
A particular food that is traditional of Tenerife is the Papas Arrugadas - potatoes that are usually served with a pepper sauce, known as a ‘mojo’, or served as an accompaniment themselves with meat.
Those who love cheese will find themselves in paradise as the island has a rather impressive production of cheese on offer.
As Tenerife is just one of seven Canary Islands, there are six others, including Lanzarote, La Palma and Gran Canaria, which are well worth visiting if you have the time. Island hopping is very easy to do with various inter-island flights available and ferry boats which can have you on a new island within a couple of hours.
