Our top tips for Tenerife
• To keep the cost of your holiday down, opt for the ‘menu del día’ whenever you see one in a restaurant. This will include three courses, plus bread and wine, beer or water, for around 10 euros per person. Bargain!
• Rent a car, especially if you are visiting the island for the first time. It will give you greater free-dom to explore all parts of the island.
• Guachinches are small stalls who serve traditional Spanish cuisine. You’ll find them often pop-ping up at special fiestas and holidays, and there are some at the Puerto de la Cruz harbour.
• Tenerife locals love a picnic; at the weekend, you’ll find many people eating al fresco, with homemade picnics. Look out zonas recreativas throughout the island as these are dedicated picnic areas, you’ll normally have them all to yourself throughout the week.
There’s lots of fantastic events throughout the year in Tenerife; carnivals are an important part of Ten-erife culture, especially in Santa Cruz. Expect costumes, partying in the streets and fun-filled parades throughout the year, especially during Semana Santa and Pascua, which falls in March or April. In June, Corpus Christi festival commemorates the institution of the Eucharist with special artistic decorations throughout the towns. One of Europe’s best classical music festivals takes place in Tenerife in June – there are live performers and orchestras every night, and always a great vibe. Sabandeño Festival happens every September, which is a folklore music festival held in La Laguna, where various Canarian and international bands showcase their music. And, of course, New Year’s Eve is big in the Canary Islands, with a traditional family meal, followed by a night of dancing in the street.
If you want to see the best of Tenerife, your best bet is to rent a car, which will allow you to take in the dramatic coastline, beautiful beaches and mountain ranges at your leisure. Finding a taxi is also very easy in Tenerife – most resorts will have a taxi rank and they are an inexpensive way of travelling around the island. For public transport, the bus in Tenerife is a very cost-effective way of seeing the sights; grab a Bono Bus Card, which will make it cheaper for multiple journeys.
