Puerto de la Cruz
Situated on Tenerife’s beautiful northern coast, Puerto de La Cruz is surrounded by rolling hills, banana plantations and dramatic parks the setting for the glorious port could not be more breathtaking. The backdrop of Mount Teide only serves to lend that extra flourish to your holiday photos. The beaches in and around Puerto de la Cruz are typical of the island's more rugged northern coast with rocky coves, and black volcanic sand - great for fun water activities.
There are two stand-out beaches, Playa Martinez and Playa Jardin, both designed by the world famous architect César Manrique, a Canarian. Martinez features waterfalls, caves to swim through and a giant fountain spurting water out to an incredible height and into a huge swimming area. The water is warm, filled via the sea so the level raises and falls with the tide. There are places to buy meals and ice-creams on an island in the middle of another large pool, made to look like a ship. The toddler area has a lovely pool and a large red sculpture to climb on and through, slide down and explore.
One of the major events to see during a holiday to Tenerife is the Carnival de Santa Cruz de Tenerife in February, when the town erupts into colour and noise. The weekend is full on dancing and fun games, like climbing greasy poles to grab flags, until Ash Wednesday and the Burial of the Sardine when everyone takes a breather until the following weekend and the Piñata.
