A mile-long sandy sweep framed by lush palms and emerald hills, Stonehaven Bay lies on the west coast and is renowned as a turtle beach - rare leatherback turtles come ashore here between April-September to lay eggs. Secluded and quiet, the beach boasts an off-the-beaten-track air and is washed by sapphire seas. Laze on the sands, bathe in the inviting waters, rent a kayak or even bodyboard the rollers breaking onto some parts of the beach. For a change, go diving or snorkelling around the nearby coral reefs, play the Mount Irvine golf course, view the exotic birds in neighbouring Grafton Beach Sanctuary or, if you're here in nesting season, take a guided tour of the turtle hatching spots. At night, the tranquil atmosphere is made for starlit dinners, although if you want to up the pace, you'll find local rum bars and calypso music in nearby Black Rock.
