Paphos, a quaint city by the sea in southwest Cyprus, is a popular tourist destination. Benefitting from an excellent climate with lots of sunshine and a laid-back lifestyle, Paphos has all the charms needed to ensure that you enjoy your summer holidays. With plenty of cheap flights available, it’s the perfect destination for a holiday getaway.
Why choose Paphos?
As an enchanting and romantic place, Paphos is a great holiday destination for couples. And it should be, given that according to legend, it was the birthplace of Aphrodite, the Ancient Greek goddess of love and beauty.
Paphos is divided by its harbour into an Old and New Town, and there are several sandy beaches nearby to enjoy, the best of which is probably Coral Bay, a short bus ride away. Many of these beaches offer the opportunity to try your hand at watersports alongside a whole host of other fun activities.
UNESCO world heritage site
Away from the beach, the entire city of Paphos is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Popular spots to visit include the castle guarding the harbour, the mysterious vaults and caves known as the Tombs of the Kings, the ancient Odeon Theatre, and the catacombs beneath the Saint Solomoni Church.
Chilled out evenings
At night, the restaurants and tavernas along the waterfront serve up traditional and delicious fresh produce, much of it caught or grown nearby. And while Paphos isn’t renowned for its nightlife, there are still plenty of bars open late into the evening. The abundance of Bouzouki clubs – a traditional Greek instrument – means that the nightlife experience here is more authentic and unique.
And if the charms of Paphos itself aren’t enough to keep you busy, head off on a day excursion to Cairo in Egypt, and gaze at the monumental Pyramids of Giza!
