Cyprus Holiday Reviews

Larnaca and the South East coast of Cyprus represent a fantastic location for me and my family to spend our holidays.

Along the coast you can find a diversity of towns and villages that can offer plenty of diversity to suit everyones taste.

Myself and my family have stayed in the quiet traditional village of Kapparis about 40 minutes drive along the east coast from Larnaca airport. We have chosen Kapparis due to its fantastic location. Just 5 minutes drive away from the lively town of Protaras or the historical town of Paralimni in Kapparis, we had all the necessary amenities closeby without being in a crowded touristic environment. And whenever we wanted to go for a fun night out we took a cab to go to Protaras or to Ayia Napa (10 minutes away).

As this is Cyprus and prices are very affordable we spend the fantastic amount of CYP3 to get from Kapparis to Protaras. And the villas we stayed in were absolutely fantastic. Within the development of Athina Gardens which you can rent directly from the developer at www.eliandevelopers.com (no agent fees makes the rental much cheaper).

The villa we stayed at had a large living room opening up to the garden and swimming pool areas which was absolutely fantastic. It also had a BBQ and absolutely all other commodities that we required to spend our relaxing holidays without the need to take care of anything else! Our favorite restaurant just close to the development was Captain Karas which had an extremely friendly staff and very delicious Mezze! - Filipa Vasques

Limassol (45 km from Larnaca) is the best place on the island, really lively town with lots and lots of restaurants, discos, clubs, lovely beaches, excellent shopping and fantastic people all around - loved every minute of our stay.

We went at the carnival season and we had so much fun. We are most definitely going back!!! - Nigel White

Larnaca itself is a medium sized city very attractive and full of modern shops amenities and freindly helpful people the majority of which speak good English.

We have recently been to Larnaca (Pervolia to be precise) to take delivery of a new appartment there. The area is a level coastal plain with mountains in the distance.

Pervolia is a sleepy town dominated by farming and tourism surrounded by fields of artichokes. The beaches are nearby and the centre of the town has some nice Tavernas internet cafes and shops/banks. - Peter Singleton

Hire a car and get up into the hills and villages to see the real Cyprus. Eat the proper Cypriot food in the tavernas and enjoy the village wines.

If on main road between Larnaca & Ayai Napa call at The Green Door in Xylofagou, looks grotty, but food superb, chips to die for and very cheap. - Roger Newman

My sister and I have been going to Larnaca for 7 years now staying for one month each summer. We stay in Larnaca Town.

It is about 10 mins from the airport by taxi although there is no iarcraft noise in the town itself. The promenade is lined with cafe bars reatsurants and side by side are Macdonalds KFC and Pizza Hut for the children.

The Cypriots adore children and many of the local people come out about 9pm as a family to meet up and eat in the restaurants. Go to the Fort Pub just past the Fort at the end of the promenade. Very quiet traditional pub with cheap drinks and a lovely atmosphere. There is a market open every day a couple of streets back from the promenade and adjacent to this on a saturday is the local produce market. Fruit and veg fantastic and unbelievebly cheap. Some of the large hotels are quite expensive but there are numerous apartments to rent and these are all good valus for money.

Sunday in Larnaca is the day all the cypriot families take the stroll by car along the promenade and it is uite a sight to see the cars full of parents and children going round and round looking at the tourists! You can take the bus into Nicosia from the beach side of the promenade. This is much cheaper that the offered coach tours and gets you into the centre of Nicosia.

Organised tours are good if you do not want to find yours own way roung though and will take you to all the historical sights including the towere where you can look across at the illeagall Turkish oppcupied part in the North of Cyprus. The poeple of Larnaca will make you very welcome and you will soon make many local friends for yours return visit. - Rosemary McCrae

Larnaca is one of the popular tourists places in Cyprus and more particularly the Phinicoudes beach if you are a summer traveller.

There you can find numerous cafes and restaurants where you can have cold beverages and cold coffees (known as Frappes).

From the Airport:

The best thing to help you get around in Cyprus is renting a car. Public transport is not available and taxis are not recommended since they are very expensive compared to renting a car.

Other major cities are easily accessible within a min of 30min drive (Nicosia) and a max of 1h and 30min (Paphos). Limassol is in the middle and you can be there in 45 min.

Restaurants:

Larnaca has numerous restaurants comprising all kitchens e.g. Chinese, Japanese, Lebanese etc...

Cyprus is famous for its Meze food which comes in both fish and meat. I suggest you try both.

Nice fish meze restaurants in Larnaca is Varosiotis which is located within walking distance from the Phinicoudes area as well as the Makenzy beach area which accommodates numerous fish taverns.

Meat meze taverns can also be found there, but if you require value for your money the best place to go is at tavern called Ypomoni (translated as Patience) which is located in a village called Dromolaxia (just 10 min drive from the Airport)

Shopping: Most popular shopping centre is Ermou street where all famous local and international brands can be found

Numerous clubs are located in Phinicoudes area and the ermou street but if you want to taste the Cypriot and Greek Music the Makenzy area is considered better. - Fotini

We have moved to Larnaca full time after holidaying in Cyprus for 17 years.

The small villages such as Orokline and Pyla are the best places to stay as they cater for locals as well as tourists so the prices are cheaper. Try Nick's Greek restaurant on the tourist strip, poeple go there year after year and email Stella and John because all the customers are treated as friends. There is a choice of 3 Indian eat in or take aways on the tourist strip, one even picks you up and takes you home, how's that for service?! Come and enjoy the real Cyprus. - Patricia

Since the year 2000 we have visited Larnaca many times. We have been staying at the Golden Bay for seven years now.

We spend in total one month of the year at the hotel which has recently seen a number of improvements to the pool and restaurant areas. We normally have a short break in the Spring and a longer one in the Summer. We are a family of four with two young children. Each year there is an increasing number of guests who return to the hotel on a regular basis. The quality of the facilities and the service offered is extremely good. If you require something that is not listed on a menu or does not appear to be available just ask and it will normally be provided for you or at least the staff will do their best to provide it for you. The Hotel is situated on Larnaca Bay next to the Sandy Beach Hotel which itself is next to the Lordos Beach Hotel (Both the Golden Bay and Lordos share the same owners). It is not the liveliest part of town but this is only about ten minutes away by taxi. However, there are plenty of bars and restaurants across the road. The Hotel is ideal for a relaxed holiday either for families or couples wanting to get away from it all. The food in each of the four restaurants is excellent, the flambes and weekend barbecues being particularly good. - Mark Salmon

My parents moved to Larnaca 5 years ago and I fly out there 4 or 5 times a year. Since Monarch started flying there I would not fly with anyone else.

They are great value for money and I can fly the dates I want, not week by week on a certain day. I love Larnaca as it is still unspoilt by the relatively small amount of tourists, they prefer the other side of the island. I would highly recommend Cyprus to anyone. It is friendly and reasonably priced. - Jenny Fitzgerald

Anyone wanting a friendly, family run, small apartment complex within five minutes drive from Larnaca airport, then we can recommend the Sea nLake Apartments.

They have a small swimming pool, snack bar and clean apartments. Reasonably priced and so friendly. We have been visiting for years. We have now bought a place in the Mackenzie beach area just near to this place. - Janet Bennett

I used to live in the City of Famagusta prior to 1974. Since then I have visited the Larnaca area annually for fun, sun, the beach and to see family and friends.

Last year I was amazed to see flamingos on the Oroklini wetlands at the beginning of July and then again at the beginning of December. Whatever the weather I enjoy walking along the promenade from the Oroklini area to Pyla district. A good place to stay for this is the Palm Beach Hotel. - Carol Christofi

Booked the SHIP INN after reading many reviews.

We were a group consisting of two couples and we have requested to have two Hotel Rooms very close to each other with en suite facilities one double and twin. Our request was met without any fuss. The service during our stay was very professional and amongst one the best we have come across during our travels to the rest of the world. During our 14 days stay we found that the hotel was excellently managed - always a friendly face on reception & pleasant and cheerful bar staff and waiters. The Anglo Turkish Cypriot family-run hotel had a good feel to the place and added lots to the hotels' character. Any kind of Help and advice (the Hotel management is well known and well respected in the Island) was always available without any prejudice. All our needs were met immediately with confidence. Within a day we felt very much at ease. We were relaxed and felt safe, then we booked a car to arrange to go on few sight seeing trips. Whenever we needed a taxi it was there within minutes (two taxi were permanently stationed there). Food and drinks prices were reasonable - food quality was really good. Lunch was served around the pool and dinner on the large veranda. The a la carte restaurant had a good reputation and caters for every taste with local and international specialities. The Hotel is situated around 1.5 miles from the Kyrenia harbour and our rooms had splendid views of the Hills (mountains) in particular CRUSADER CASTLE of ST.HILARION. The gardens and the surrounding spacious grounds/open fields had the most welcoming atmosphere. A big Car park was very practical to go in and out. Early October is still warm enough to eat outside without a jumper (and definitely warm enough during the day! We hardly saw a cloud the whole week). The place had some touches which made you feel SPECIAL. Talking to other guests we found majority of them were regulars visiting THE SHIP year after year – some coming to this beautiful part of the world more than once a year. All in all really pleased we chose this hotel and would have no doubt in highly recommending it. - Mortimore

We are going to retire in Larnaca. There is a little village called Leopetri, the people are so nice.

We have a place out there and go about 3-4 times a year but can not retire yet. I just have to wait for my hubby to finish working on the place, then I'll be out there like a shot! I just love it and I will learn a bit of Greek to feel at home - I just love it. - Mrs Dunford

We try to fly over to Larnaca about three times a year.

We have a Bungalow in Avgorou. The village is small with wonderful warm people whom mostly will bend over backwards to help or assist you. Even though we are only a twenty minute drive to Ayia Napa we prefer as a family to stay in our home around the pool and enjoy the beautiful sunshine and peace that this wonderful Island always offers. With no doubt we will retire to this majical Island. - Lisa Meredith-Webb

We have a place in the Mackenzie area of Larnaca and find the whole Island just wonderful.

There are lots of restaurants along the Larnaca Promenade and you can sit and have your meal watching the sun set on the sea. We can recommend our favourite which is the one called Papaarazzi. The food is very good and the service is excellent as well. Also Hobies the steak restaurant is great and from the upstairs the view is fantastic. If you are looking for reasonably priced accomodation then try the Augusta apartments on the Promenade which are very good price wise and very clean. Larnaca is a good base from which to tour the Island but we would advise you to hire a car since public transport is not wonderful. With a car you can travel to a different area each day and see most of the dream Island in a two week stay. Beaches are wonderful and Ayia Napa area has particularly nice beaches. The drive from Larnaca is easy and is only about 45 minutes or so. The villages are just as they were years ago and well worth a visit and perhaps to Lefkara to look at the lace made by the ladies of the village. Not cheap but worth the money. Whatever your holiday 'likes' are, you can find it on this Island - sun, beaches, shopping, walking, mountains, water parks/water sports or eating out - they have them all. - Janet Bennett

We go to Cyprus every year for a total of about 3-4 months. We always fly into Larnaca.

When you visit you need to get off the tourist trail and visit the villages. Make use of the tavernas as you'll get far better food and value for money. You will feel the genuine warmth and friendliness of the Cypriot people! In Larnaca visit ST Lazarus church the fort and stroll along the beautiful palm lined promenade. Just outside Larnaca on the shore of the huge salt lake visit the ancient mosque where Mohammed's auntie is reputed to have fallen off her donkey many centuries ago. If you visit at the right time you may even be lucky enough to get a look at migratory birds that stop for a rest or even be able to sit and watch beautiful pink flamingoes flocked in the lake - what a sight!! It's easy and safe to drive in Cyprus - the main road that crosses the island all the way from Paphos in the West to Agia Napa in the East is a delight compared to our motorways!! Explore the Troodos and visit the hillside villages. Get along the coast to see ancient churches but whatever you do there is usually something you'll want to go back for, time and time again. It's a beautiful island with a really hospitable population. - Helen Edwards

In North or South Cyprus the weather is always great and the scenery awesome.

I've opted for the North as I find the place more like walking or driving into the 70s UK and a lot quieter than the holiday resorts of the South. Both the Greeks and Turkish people are all friendly and charming but the North I find is cheaper for property. Crossing the border if flying into Larnaca is very simple. Monarch flights from Gatwick are reasonable especially if you book in advance when they have the offers on. It's a shame they don't fly out of Bristol or Cardiff which would save me a long drive and parking fees but if you want a good holiday at a reasonable price you will not beat Cyprus North or South. Forget about the barrack room lawyers who will tell you that you can't cross the border, that is rubbish as there are now 7 crossing points open and lots more on the cards and with the present leadership on both sides talking it may not be long before you see a move to some sort of reunification. - Phil Chappell
