Gibraltar: Introduction

Often referred to as ‘The Rock’, Gibraltar is undoubtedly one of the most unique destinations in Europe that you can visit. While geographically it is actually located in the south of Spain, Gibraltar is a British overseas territory, making the combination of the sunny Spanish weather and the very British features it beholds a wonderful and fun experience in itself. Flights to Gibraltar are short and comfortable, taking just under three hours, so book tickets to The Rock and discover something truly unexpected and inspiring.

Why choose Gibraltar?

Gibraltar is one of those destinations that just has to be seen to be believed. Just to getting to the Rock is an experience in itself as by plane, the runway is actually stationed on the main road in which those travelling by car must use to reach it. The peninsula really is so unique to look at, built up largely of the rock. There is no other destination that mixes Spanish and British influences so well while offering something for everyone to do and enjoy.

Our Top Tip For Gibraltar

"You have to head up the Rock! The cable car is cheap and quick, but a warning: the apes are hungry and very brave, so don't take a bag or any food!"
Ivan, Cabin Crew

Gibraltar highlights

Mediterranean Steps

The Mediterranean Steps is a rather strenuous, but rewardable, walk along the side of the Rock which offers breathtaking views of Gibraltar, allowing you to get away from the hustle and bustle of the centre. Throughout the walk you will be treated to spectacular views of North Africa across the strait, a plethora of wildlife and Martin’s Cave. However, access to the cave is very much restricted due to the sheer amount of Schreiber's Bats that live there! While the walk is arduous, the views from the summit are completely worth it for you can see beyond the Bay and the Strait as well as O’Hara’s Batteries on the south side.

Monkeys

Gibraltar is famed for its monkeys who add a fair amount of character to the country and interestingly enough, it is believed that as long as the Gibraltar Monkeys are present, Gibraltar will remain under British rule. In fact, during World War Two, as the population decreased to only seven monkeys, Sir Winston Churchill ordered that more monkeys were to be brought over from Morocco and Algeria to replenish the numbers!

The majority of the monkeys live on the upper area of the Rock, but they are known to venture into the town centre now and again - just make sure to hold on tight to your personal property as these cheeky chappies have often been accused of trying to (and sometimes succeeding in) running off with the odd handbag, hat or pair of sunglasses.

St Michael’s Cave

St Michael’s Cave is a very interesting spot to visit in Gibraltar and is part of the reason behind the myth that the Rock was linked to Africa through a subterranean passage that runs under the Strait, because it is so deep. The Cathedral Cave is an absolute must and for anyone who loves to watch a production, sitting in this auditorium is an experience that you will not find anywhere else. It has been given its moniker because of the mineral formations that surround the walls which look very much like the pipes you would find on a grand cathedral organ. There is a capacity of 400 and if you fancy catching a concert or a ballet, it is highly advised that you do so.

Food, glorious food

There are a number of local dishes for foodies to try in Gibraltar including a spinach tart known as Torta de Acelgas and Calentita, a sort of pancake based dish made from chickpea flour. Spiced lamb and chicken kebabs cooked over a hot stone are also highly recommended. It goes without saying that fish plays a very big part in Gibraltarian cuisine and some of the best fish restaurants you will ever find are located down along the marinas. The Main Street and Casemates Square offer a plethora of restaurants, bars and traditional coffee houses from the 1800s where you will be able to find something to whet all appetites.

Surrounding Areas

Spain is literally a stone’s throw away and it is very much worth hiring a car and venturing out onto the Costa Del Sol for a day towards the cities of Estepona and Marbella. There are also various organised excursions offering day trips to these destinations too. If you can, stop off at Puerto Banus which is located only a few miles away from Marbella and is known for being a celebrity hot spot where the rich and famous cruise along the marina in their sports cars.
