Other must-sees are Heraklion's fabulous archeological museum, fascinating nearby Knossos or trips inland to experience the island's charming villages, rolling hills and medieval monasteries.
Located on the northern foot of Psiloritis Mountain, between the villages of ancient and modern Eleftherna, there's a wealth of options including walking and hiking to keep you active. This stunning area provides a fantastic location for those wishing to explore Crete. To switch the scenery, head for the nearby beach and waterfront at Rethymnon, here you'll find golden sands, superb facilities and an up-tempo atmosphere.
When you're peckish, a few shops and tavernas lie ready at hand in the village and in the nearby village of Magarites, while at night, join with the traditional eateries in the centre of Rethymnon which offers mellow evening venues for enjoying delicious Cretan meals as well as inviting waterfront restaurants to linger in.
