Kokkino Chorio : Holiday Accommodation
Backed by stunning mountains, traditional Kokkino Chorio makes a relaxing retreat, and is ideal for those seeking to explore this stunning island. On Crete's north coast, west of Heraklion and close to Chania, this unpretentious Greek village has an old centre of paved lanes and rustic cottages, which trails it way down to a lovely rugged coast.
With magnificent views across Souda Bay to the Akrotiri, Kokkino Chorio is a quaint little village famous for its role in the film, Zorbas the Greek, Along the picturesque coastline, you'll find long expanses of sand and pebbles supplied with sunbeds and sunshades and washed by satin-blue seas. When you're peckish, beachside tavernas lie ready and at night, join with the traditional eateries in the centre to offer mellow evening venues for enjoying delicious Cretan meals.
One of the beauties of Kokkino Chorio is its proximity to some of Crete's best-known sights, so while you're here, make sure you explore. Don't miss a visit to Heraklion's fabulous archeological museum, fascinating nearby Knossos or trips inland to experience the island's charming villages, rolling hills and medieval monasteries. Interesting places to explore include the rock formations and caves of Petsi (otherwise known as Kararotopos) and Katalimata in the centre of the village, as well as heading to the impressive Elephant Cave at Cape Drapano - approximately ten metres underwater and full of stalagmites of various shapes and colours. There's also a small glass workshop on the outskirts of the village which recycles glass to produce beautiful lamps and ornaments.
