Rome: Introduction

History buffs will love what Rome has to offer, with its myriad historical sites and cultural institutions. The old centre of the city (which includes the properties of the Holy See) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it's here that you'll find some of the most famous landmarks.

Rome View

Among them are the Colosseum, Forums, Mausoleum of Hadrian, Pantheon, Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore and Column of Marcus Aurelius. There are astounding buildings around every corner and one of the best things to do in Rome is simply to wander its cobbled streets, exploring the charming squares you come across and soaking up the atmosphere of this vibrant and bustling city.

The Forums

Art lovers will be in heaven when exploring some of Rome's many museums and galleries - not to be missed are the Sistine Chapel, the Borghese Gallery (where you'll find paintings and sculptures by the likes of Bernini, Caravaggio and Titian) and the Capitoline Museums, which house an impressive array of antique Roman and Greek sculptures and other artworks.

Enjoy the evenings in Rome

Aside from the vast array of cultural and historical attractions, another excellent reason to book a holiday in Rome is to experience its cuisine. You'll find everything from Michelin-starred restaurants to cheap cafes on Rome's streets and around its squares, so there's something to suit every budget.

Spaghetti alla carbonara, carciofi alla romana and bucatini all'amatriciana are just a few of the local dishes it's worth looking out for on menus. A tip for finding the best authentic restaurants is to head into one of Rome's residential areas and pay a visit to one of the tucked-away trattorias.

After dinner, you can take in an opera show at the astounding Teatro dell'Opera di Roma or head to one of the chic bars to mingle with the locals. The San Lorenzo district attracts students and a young crowd, while Trastevere and Testaccio are other hotspots for nightlife, with plenty of bars that open well into the evening dotted around picturesque squares and along charming streets.
