Venice and Venetian Riviera: Introduction

As the world's only pedestrianised city, Venice is a wonderful place to explore on foot - or by taking a ride in one of its famous gondolas that glide up and down the canals. There is beautiful architecture at every turn, countless museums and galleries and fascinating historical monuments for you to discover.

Start in San Marco Square where you can view the amazing San Marco Church, which has been constructed in a Romanesque-Byzantine style. Its five domes and facade adorned with marble and mosaics make it really stand out, while its bell tower is the tallest structure in the city.

Other attractions in the San Marco district include the Doge's Palace - a spectacular example of Venetian architecture that's now home to an extensive museum - and the Bridge of Sighs, which was constructed to link the palace to the nearby prison.

Other attractions in Venice

There is so much to see and do on a holiday in Venice it's worth spending a week here, rather than just coming for a few days. As well as its numerous cultural attractions, there are some lovely beaches on its islands where you can soak up the sunshine alongside the locals.

In the evenings, you can head to one of Venice's many theatres to see a play, opera, ballet or musical performance in truly opulent surroundings. La Fenice Theatre is the best known of Venice's venues, but the Goldoni and Malibran theatres also put on wonderful shows.

There are dozens of restaurants and bars in Venice where you can sample local specialities and enjoy a candlelit dinner with your partner. The trattorias are the best places to head to for a taste of Venetian cuisine, with fish featuring on many of their menus. You'll find affordable establishments alongside high-end eateries, so pick somewhere that suits your budget. If you're keen to make your night last longer, head to one of the bars in the San Polo district, which is known for being lively once night falls.
