2011 News - Flights - Monarch is world’s greenest airline

11 03 2011

Award winning leisure airline Monarch has this week been named as the world’s greenest airline at the ITB Berlin travel show.

The study of airline efficiency was carried out by Atmosfair, a carbon offsetting company, and was based on how efficient an airline’s fleet is and how full its planes normally fly. Monarch was judged as the world’s most efficient airline with Atmosfair praising the airline’s efficient aircraft fleet and high passenger numbers per flight.

The top 10 rankings of Atmosfair’s Airline Index 2011:

1    Monarch Airlines
2    Condor Flugdienst
3    Air Transat A.T.Inc.
4    Air New Zealand Link
5    Kingfisher Airlines
6    EVA Airways
7    Air Europa
8    Srilankan Airlines
9    TAM Regional
10   Edelweiss Air

Atmosfair is a non-profit organisation for combating climate change and was founded in 2004 from a research project of the German federal Ministry for the environment.

Monarch currently operates a fleet of 30 aircraft, serving over 50 destinations world-wide from a number of UK airports including Birmingham, London Gatwick, London Luton and Manchester. Services are split between scheduled and charter flights, with the airline carrying almost 6 million passengers per year. Monarch is the oldest airline in the UK still operating under its original brand name, and will this year enter its 43rd year of flying.
