2008 News Archive - Flights - Bookings soar on Monarch Scheduled flights from Birmingham International Airport
26 09 2005
The announcement last week of three new routes and an increased seat capacity on existing services from Birmingham International Airport, resulted in a record weekend of bookings for Monarch Scheduled from the low fares capital of the Midlands.
Seats to three new destinations; Murcia on the ever popular Costa Blanca (Costa Calida) and the Balearic Islands of Mallorca and Menorca, went on sale on Thursday and are already being snapped up by holiday makers hungry to get away to these Mediterranean hotspots.
Flights commence from February 2006*, with Murcia already proving to be a runaway success, selling over 1,000 seats in its first four days of booking. A brand new destination for Monarch Scheduled, it’s immediate popularity is a clear indicator of demand for the route and one which will undoubtedly prove to be a firm favourite with passengers from the Midlands next year.
Bookings to Palma de Mallorca and Menorca have also been exceptional over the weekend with passengers on flights between Birmingham and Menorca expected to equal those on services from London Luton Airport, which saw 90% load factors throughout summer 2005. Smaller than its famous sister - Majorca, Menorca’s popularity has increased rapidly as a scheduled destination in recent years, and featured highly in a recent online destination poll on www.flymonarch.com.
The increased capacity on existing routes from Birmingham has also been well received and helped drive the weekend’s bookings to five times their normal level. The introduction of a second daily flight to Malaga next summer positions Monarch Scheduled as market leader on the route and generated over 2,000 bookings over the weekend.
Tim Jeans, Managing Director of Monarch Scheduled is delighted with the level of sales so far and comments, “Since opening a base at Birmingham International Airport in April 2005, we have been overwhelmed by the support of our Midlands based passengers. The weekend’s booking figures, in response to the launch of our new routes, has been fantastic and is proof that we are providing the Midlands with something that it clearly wants – low fares, a high quality service, to the right destinations.”
Monarch Scheduled’s Birmingham base began operating flights to four destinations in April 2005 and this increases to seven destinations for Summer 2006. Fares start from just £39.99 one way including all taxes (£74.99 return) and include complimentary daily newspapers and a refreshing hot towel service; also available is a unique range of tasty hot and cold meals with prices from £2.50. Seats can be pre-booked at £5 per one-way flight to avoid the last minute free-for-all and regular travellers are rewarded too, with a range of benefits through the airline’s loyalty scheme, Vantage Club.
