- 40% of all Monarch seats pre-allocated online -
Free seating on flights and the inevitable scrum when boarding has become the norm with many no frills carriers, however passengers travelling with low cost airline Monarch are proof that this is part of the flight experience they wish to avoid, with 40% of them now choosing to pre-allocate their seats prior to departure.
The ability to pay and pre-allocate a seat was introduced by Monarch on it scheduled services in April 2005, with passengers able to view a visual of the aircraft cabin and select their seat when making their booking at a cost of £5 per sector. This service was enhanced in November 2005, with the introduction of extra legroom seating on scheduled flights, offering 34 inches of legroom, which can be pre-booked at a cost of £15 per flight (£20 for Canaries services).
Commenting on the uptake of pre-allocated seats, managing director of Monarch’s scheduled services, Tim Jeans, said, “Since introducing pre-allocated and extra legroom seating last year, over 800,000 seats have been allocated online, with 40% of all Monarch passengers now taking advantage of this service and pre-selecting their seats - a rise of 10% in the past two months. This should be a clear indication to the industry that whilst free seating is the preferred boarding method adopted by many low cost carriers, it is not liked by an increasing number of passengers who prefer to select their own seat and upgrade to extra legroom before they board”.
Monarch operates scheduled flights to Spain, Gibraltar and Portugal from Aberdeen, Birmingham, Blackpool, London Gatwick, London Luton and Manchester. Fares include complimentary daily newspapers, a refreshing hot towel service and require no additional payment for checking-in baggage; also available is a unique range of tasty hot and cold meals with prices from £3.00. Regular travellers are rewarded too, with a range of benefits through the airline’s loyalty scheme, Vantage Club.
