2008 News Archive - Flights - Monarch Scheduled announces five new routes, including Lisbon, Naples, and Madrid

18 01 2005

Low fare airline Monarch Scheduled, today announces that it will establish a brand new low-cost route between the UK and Lisbon, the first since 2001. At the same time it announces the addition of a further four new routes to its timetable, bringing the total number of routes to 27.

The low-cost link between the UK and Lisbon was severed almost four years ago when Go ceased its operations to the city, meaning that travellers have had no choice but to pay extortionate fares with traditional carriers such as BA. Prices to Lisbon start from as little as £39 one way including all taxes and charges.

Reacting to customer demand for the low-cost connection, Monarch Scheduled’s new daily flights from London Gatwick to Portugal’s capital city go on sale today on www.flymonarch.com, along with the other four new routes.

New routes announced today are:

  • London Gatwick to Lisbon and Granada (both daily from 19 May)

  • Manchester to Naples (daily from 28 April)

  • Manchester to Madrid (daily from 28 April)

  • Birmingham to Alicante and Faro (weekly from 28 April)

  • Tim Jeans, managing director of Monarch Scheduled says, “Lisbon is the last outpost of the high fares and poor service offered by airlines like BA and TAP Air Portugal. The city is a gem, left largely unnoticed until Euro 2004 brought the city to the attention of everyone.

“All the city needed was to be on the low fares map and, from 19 May, it will be.”

This news follows on from the airline’s announcement last month that it is to launch a new base at Birmingham and increase its programme from Manchester with the addition of Madrid and Almeria to the network. The additional routes further emphasise Monarch’s determination to expand its unique low fare – high service operation from all the major gateways in the UK.

Lead in one way prices (including all taxes and charges) are:

  • Gatwick to Lisbon - from £39

  • Gatwick to Granada - from £29

  • Manchester to Naples – from £39

  • Manchester to Madrid - from £40

  • Birmingham to Faro – from £39

  • Birmingham to Alicante – from £39

  • Fares include pre-bookable allocated seating to avoid the last minute free-for-all, complimentary daily newspapers and in-flight entertainment and a refreshing hot towel service. Regular travellers are rewarded too, with a range of benefits through the airline’s loyalty scheme Vantage Club.

Today’s expansion brings the Monarch Scheduled network to 24 routes. Bookings can be made on www.flymonarch.com or by calling 08700 40 63 00.
