2008 News Archive - Flights - Monarch Scheduled carries over a million passengers in best ever season

02 11 2004

Monarch Scheduled has revealed its best ever results, following a successful summer season, which saw traffic leap by 33%. 1.1million passengers flew with the low fare airline in the six summer months (May to October) compared with 820,000 in 2003.

The increase in passenger numbers follows the doubling of flights on many routes including London Gatwick to Malaga and Alicante.

New routes launched this year include Manchester to Barcelona, Tenerife and Gibraltar and the start of weekly flights, which began from 1 November from London Luton to Lanzarote and Gran Canaria.

These results follow Monarch Scheduled’s ending of its ‘full service’ on-board product. Free drinks and meals were axed in favour of a healthier and fresher pay as you go service. Monarch Scheduled still offers pre-bookable allocated seating, free newspapers, in-flight entertainment and a hot towel service.

Commenting on the results, Monarch Scheduled’s new MD Tim Jeans said; “To increase passenger numbers by a third in a fiercely competitive market shows how robust our business model really is. It shows that our passengers can see that we are providing better value than the stripped out offerings of easyJet and BMIbaby.”

Notes to editors:

Instead of offering the traditional set meal included in the price, passengers on Monarch Scheduled have the option of buying a delicious hot meal, freshly baked snack, light salad, imaginatively filled sandwich or full English breakfast from the recently launched in-flight menu. Hot drinks, plus a selection of wines, spirits and minerals are also available.

Monarch Airlines operates both charter and scheduled services, branded Monarch and Monarch Scheduled respectively.

Founded in 1968, Monarch Airlines is part of the Monarch group of companies together with Monarch Aircraft Engineering Ltd and tour operators Cosmos and seat-only specialists Avro. Monarch is one of the UK’s largest leisure airlines and the principal independent supplier of charter seats to tour operators large and small, flying to around 100 destinations across Europe, America, Africa and Asia from the UK’s principal and regional airports.

Monarch Scheduled is the scheduled service division of Monarch Airlines offering services from London Luton, London Gatwick and Manchester Airports to destinations in Spain, Portugal and Gibraltar.

The airline, based at Luton, operates one of the most well-equipped fleets in the skies today comprising 17 Airbus and seven Boeing aircraft.
