- first flights depart for Granada and Lisbon -
Low cost airline Monarch Scheduled commenced its brand new daily services to Lisbon and Granada from London Gatwick last week.
Flight ZB782 took off from Gatwick with 131 passengers on board, destined for Portugal’s capital city Lisbon and firmly re-establishes the low cost link between the two cities. Low-cost air travel, which has given access to millions of new travellers all over Europe, had previously been denied those wishing to fly between London and Lisbon. Monarch ended that in January when its new service first went on sale and sales have rocketed ever since now that travellers no longer have to pay extortionate fares.
Just a few hours after the Lisbon departure, Monarch Scheduled’s very first flight to Granada, took to the air. This brand new route further enhances the airline’s offering to travellers to and from Andalucia and is in addition to the two launched last month to the Costa del Sol; Birmingham to Malaga and Manchester to Almeria. The airline’s timetable now offers unprecedented choice for travellers to the Andalucia region with flights from London Gatwick, London Luton, Birmingham and Manchester to Malaga; from Manchester to Almeria; from London Gatwick to Granada and flights from both London Luton and Manchester to Gibraltar. Most flights operate either daily, or twice daily, with Manchester to Malaga increasing to three times a day in the peak season.
Tim Jeans, managing director of Monarch Scheduled said; “For the past few years, travellers to Lisbon have had no choice other than to pay high fares, but now they can take advantage of flights from as little as £39 one way. This service is also great news for tourism in Lisbon, as it’ll bring an extra 50,000 visitors to the region in the first year.
“In addition, Monarch Scheduled’s range of flights between the UK and Andalucia has gone from strength to strength. We now offer frequent and convenient services from four major UK airports, which is great news for passengers heading for the ‘Real Spain’ and second home owners travelling regularly between the UK and the Costa del Sol. I’m certain that Monarch Scheduled’s low-cost high-quality-service formula will be a big success in both Lisbon and Granada.”
Debby Bond, head of route development said “Granada is a brand new destination, building upon Gatwick's growing route network. We have had very positive passenger response welcoming this new route and the opportunity it gives regular travellers to fly directly to another Spanish cultural city.”
“It was great to have Tim Jeans here to celebrate the inaugural service. Passengers were really entering the Spanish fiesta party atmosphere at the check-in desk, enjoying traditional Spanish flamenco music, dancing and local cuisine.”
Prices to Lisbon start from just £39 one way including tax (£76 return) and to Granada from £39 one way including tax (£70 return). Fares include complimentary daily newspapers and a refreshing hot towel service, while seats can be pre-booked to avoid the last minute free-for-all. Monarch Scheduled also offers a unique range of tasty hot and cold meals with prices from £2.50. Regular travellers are rewarded too, with a range of benefits through the airline’s loyalty scheme Vantage Club.
