2008 News Archive - Flights - Tsunami disaster appeal - Monarch Airlines donates its onboard collections
06 01 2005
Since 29 December Monarch Airlines has been donating onboard collections of passengers’ spare currency to the tsunami disaster appeal*. Currency of any denomination can be donated, and will be collected by cabin crew during every flight. There has been huge demand from passengers and staff to donate to this cause and the airline expects to be able to provide a significant contribution to the tsunami fund raising effort.
For the last twelve years Monarch has collected passengers’ unspent foreign currency in aid of Macmillan Cancer Relief, and has raised over £1.2 million over this period of time. The decision to divert collections was made as an immediate response to help those who suffered in the tsunami disaster. However, to ensure that Macmillan Cancer Relief’s invaluable work does not suffer in the meantime, Monarch will itself donate to the charity sums equivalent to the amounts collected during the same time period last year.
*Funds will be donated to Disasters Emergency Committee which is an umbrella group of UK aid organisations - including Action Aid, British Red Cross and Oxfam - working to provide clean water, food and shelter to thousands. To donate directly, visit www.dec.org.uk or call (from the UK) dial 0870 60 60 900.Previous Page
