2010 News - Holidays - Summer 2010 off to a flying start with Monarch
05 04 2010
Award winning travel group Monarch’s has seen flight and holiday sales for Summer 2010 soar as holiday makers ensure they aren’t caught short by the British weather again this summer and snap up bargains to holiday hotspots around the globe.
In top spot with Monarch Holidays for Summer 2010, the Spanish Canary Islands (Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria) and Balearic Islands (Majorca, Menorca, Ibiza) have once again proven they are firm favourites with Brits, and have seen booking increases of 54% and 40% respectively verses Summer 2009. Destinations outside the eurozone such as Turkey, Egypt and Cancun (Mexico) are also once again maintaining their popularity. The destination boasting the biggest increase in bookings for Summer 2010 however is Florida which has already seen a staggering 154% growth compared to last summer.
Monarch Holiday sales for Summer 2010 are also showing a shift in duration verses 2009, plus a definite split in preferred board basis, depending on the destination being visited. 14 night holidays are once again the favoured duration, however the biggest rise is being seen in 9 and 10 night durations which have risen by 47% and 88% respectively since last Summer.
All inclusive and self catering holidays are on the rise within Europe. Bookings to the Balearics are up 350% (self catering) and 65% (all inclusive), whilst the Canary Islands are seeing a 72% increase (self catering) and a 13% increase (all inclusive).
Board basis outside of the eurozone is focused on less structured options with bed and breakfast, room only and self catering accommodation all seeing growth. In Turkey the increases are being seen in bed and breakfast accommodation (+ 17%) and self catering (+14%), whilst in Florida, room only and self catering accommodation has risen by 590% and 252% respectively. The exception to this is Sharm el Sheikh where half board accommodation has seen the largest increase (+340%).
For flight only bookings on scheduled flights, Monarch’s new routes to Turkey, which launch in May, (Bodrum, Dalaman and Antalya) are selling strongly, whilst the Balearic and Canary Islands are seeing a huge increase in bookings verses Summer 2009 – Palma (+40%), Ibiza (+40%), Menorca (+30%), Lanzarote (+20%) and Tenerife (+15%). Destinations in mainland Spain are also showing a return to form with Malaga and Alicante selling strongly for Summer.
Commenting on the sales trends, managing director of Monarch Flights and Holidays, Tim Jeans, said, “It’s great to see the Canary and Balearic Islands back in top spot for Monarch Holidays, all of which are performing strongly for Summer 2010. Bookings to the islands are being driven primarily by groups looking for great value self catering options and families booking all inclusive stays. All inclusive holiday options provide fantastic value for money, and our booking trends indicate that families in particular are looking to stay closer to home this year and lock in costs prior to travel.
“14 night holidays are once again the leading holiday duration, and have replaced 8 and 9 night durations which were the top duration during summer 2009 – although still remain popular for Summer 2010. This is a great sign that consumer confidence has returned and customers are planning to maximise their time away this year. As expected, outside of the Eurozone where living costs are lower, bed and breakfast, self catering and room only accommodation options are seeing huge increases. The strength of bookings to Florida is also fantastic news and reflective of the improvement of the pound against the US dollar.”
