As UK schools finish for the long summer holidays, Mediterranean hotspots on the Spanish Islands are proving to be firm favourites for Monarch holidaymakers, who are jetting off in their droves to sample the delights of these Western Med destinations.
Monarch Holidays’ top spot for Summer 2010 is the Canary Islands which has seen a massive 63% increase in holiday bookings vs Summer 2009. The biggest growth is being reflected in full board accommodation, which has seen a rise of 138% compared to last summer, but this is closely being followed by all inclusive and half board holidays which have seen increases of 80% and 63% respectively. Tenerife specifically is in huge demand with Monarch Holidays customers and bookings are already up 150% vs Summer 2009. There has also been a defined shift in demand towards higher end properties in Tenerife, with a 22% increase in bookings for four diamond rated hotels this summer.
Elsewhere in the network, demand remains strong for resorts throughout Turkey and Cyprus, and in particular for self catering properties and bed and breakfast board basis which have grown 37% and 35% respectively in Cyprus, and 27% and 9% in Turkey.
Further afield in far flung destinations such as The Maldives, Grenada, Tobago, Kenya and Mexico growth is being seen for properties offering a full board basis and bookings have risen 25% vs Summer 2009. The greatest demand remains for all inclusive properties however, which make up 77% of all Monarch Holidays longhaul bookings.
Commenting on the strength of summer bookings, Managing Director of Monarch Holidays, Hugh Morgan said, “Demand for Monarch Holidays continues to remain very strong and whilst early booking trends indicated that this summer was all about the Eastern Mediterranean, the improved strength of the Pound against the Euro has resulted in a last minute surge of bookings to destinations throughout the Western Mediterranean and in particular to resorts throughout the Canary Islands of Tenerife, Lanzarote, Grand Canaria and Fuerteventura. After the challenges of the past 12 months, confidence has clearly been restored in the market and it’s great to see holiday durations lengthening and returning to previous levels. Whilst Summer 09 saw bookings for 7 to 10 night holidays surge, demand has once again been restored for 14 + night holidays and we are seeing a significant increase to both long and short haul holiday hotspots around the world.”
