2008 News Archive - Holidays - Brits should 'check their insurance' when driving in Portugal

13 02 2008

Britons taking holidays in Portugal have been advised to check the details of their insurance, should they choose to rent a hire car.

According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), people should check what their car insurance policy will cover during their time abroad.

Malcolm Tarling, a spokesperson for the ABI added that sometimes those driving overseas such as in Portugal are only covered for the minimum requirement - which does not necessarily include theft - adding that insurance can cost more in certain countries.

"For those countries where there's a high accident rate, such as some of the Mediterranean countries - Greece or Portugal for example - you may pay more than if you were driving in France or Germany or Holland," commented Mr Tarling.

Research conducted by Easycar in 2006 uncovered that Portugal is among the most popular driving locations for Britons abroad.

Other locations included Spain, USA, Australia, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Ireland and Germany.
