2008 News Archive - Holidays - Bulgarian summer has a rosy outlook

03 04 2007

British tourists have discovered that Bulgaria is one of the most beautiful and friendly countries in eastern Europe, but many are unaware that it is also one of the rosiest.

Bulgaria's Valley of the Roses is set to bloom into brilliant hues of reds, pinks, whites and every colour in between.

Nestled between the Balkan and Sredna Gora mountain ranges, the valley is one of Bulgaria's best kept secrets.

Since the 17th century, the Valley of the Roses has been one of the most prolific producers of rose oil in the world.

And before each rose harvest, Bulgaria celebrates with the aptly named Festival of the Roses.

This festival sees girls of the towns of Kazanlak, Karlovo and Stara Zagora don traditional costumes and perform rose-picking rituals.

A rose queen is then chosen and the festival is capped off with a magnificent parade down the main street of each respective town.
