Cape Town in South Africa offers an outstanding place to spend any time, but new year will offer some very special attractions.
Happening in the middle of the southern hemisphere summer, the city will offer beautiful beaches and the spectacular mountain scenery of Table Mountain, along with the full summer glory of the Cape floral kingdom.
Amid all this there will be plenty of partying and braais (babecues) as the tavern of the seas lives up to its reputation.
New Year will then bring the famous Cape Minstrel Carnival on January 1st, while sports fans can enjoy the beginning of the Test Match between the South Africa and West Indies cricket teams at Newlands, which enjoys a dramatic mountain backdrop.
Visitors enjoying the fine beaches and atmosphere can also visit one of the many wineries, or learn about some of the key features of the country's turbulent history, such as paying a visit to Robben Island, famous for the prison where Nelson Mandela was held for 18 years.
