2008 News Archive - Holidays - Celebrate Sagra delle Virtu in Teramo

01 05 2007

With the arrival of May, also comes Sagra delle Virtu, the Italian festival which celebrates the coming of Spring.

And like most festivals in Italy, the Sagra delle Virtu features a glut of good food, especially the delicious traditional minestrone soup.

Undoubtedly the best town to celebrate this wonderful festival in is Teramo, in the state of Abruzzo.

Visitors should be sure to go to the Castellone, an ancient medieval fortification where minestrone is handed out free to all comers.

And there is nowhere that does minestrone as well as Teramo.

Featuring the special locally-grown fennel called annit, onions, carrots, turnips, zucchini, potatoes, carnations, cauliflower, peas, beans, lentils, garlic, parsley, lettuce, spinach, sage, pipirella and more, the soup is a gastronome's dream.

Located near the Vezzola and Tordino rivers, Teramo was founded in pre-Roman times and is one of the oldest cities in the country.

The town is well known for the Cathedral of San Berardo, one of the most beautiful in all of Italy.
