2008 News Archive - Holidays - Celebrate the Fiesta del Carmen in Marbella

27 06 2007

With the advent of summer, there comes a dizzying array of festivals across the Europe, but the Fiesta del Carmen in Marbella is one of the most special.

Held on July 16th, the festival sees a long procession wind its way through town, accompanied by much drinking, dancing and singing.

It is held in honour of the patron saint of seafarers, Carmen, who watches over fishermen and sea merchants.

Marbella is traditionally a fishing town, so the festival is one of the most important of the year for this sun-gilded town on Spain's Costa del Sol.

However, Marbella has come a long way from the humble fishing village that it once was.

Today the idyllic town is a tourist hot-spot, where thousands of Britons flock to every year for, sun, sea and sangria.

The town has also become a popular destination for golfing addicts, as it features some of the best courses in Europe.
