2008 News Archive - Holidays - China to become top destination

29 03 2007

More Britons are to start visiting China on their holidays, a recently-released study has discovered.

Next year the country will rise to prominence as one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world, the survey from Thomas Cook found.

Beijing is set to host the Olympics in 2008, an event which is expected to attract visitors in their droves.

Executive director of Thomas Cook holidays division Ian Derbyshire told the publication: "China and Vietnam are examples of a different trend we are seeing where people are looking for culture and history as well as great beaches."

Both Greece and Turkey are also set to remain much-visited destinations with holidaying Brits, Mr Derbyshire added.

Vietnam and Oman are also expected to become popular countries to visit, the Thomas Cook research predicted.

Tourist attractions in Beijing include Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City and the hundreds of picturesque Buddhist temples scattered throughout the city.
