04 04 2008
Celebrate sand, sea, salt air and summer at this one-of-a-kind event that claims to be New York City's greatest summertime happening.
The Mermaid Parade on Coney Island begins this year on Saturday June 21st at 14:00 local time. It is a traditional affair that draws on the resort's early 1900s mardi gras.
Expect to see participants dressed in handmade mermaid, Neptune, lighthouse and various sea creature costumes parading alongside antique cars, marching bands and drill teams.
"Each year, a different celebrity King Neptune and Queen Mermaid rule over the proceedings ... assisting in the opening of the ocean for the summer swimming season by ... cutting ribbons representing the seasons and tossing fruit ... to appease the sea gods," the festival website notes.
Previous carnival kings and queens have included Ron Kuby, Curtis Sliwa, Moby, and David Johansen.
Enjoy the post-parade ball complete with burlesque acts and raffles.
