Couples planning a dream honeymoon have been advised to consider Croatia, the "unpretentious" alternative to some of Europe's more established destinations.
A new report in the Caledon Citizen concedes that Croatia "may not seem the most obvious choice for a Mediterranean honeymoon", but couples have been advised to look beyond the usual favourites.
Croatia has a longer Mediterranean shoreline than France and also has more offshore airlines than Spain and Italy, the report adds.
"This is the Mediterranean you've always dreamed about: ancient stone houses framed by vineyards and olive trees, unpretentious waterfront cafes where tourists can mingle with local fishermen and seawater so clear you hardly need a mask and snorkel," it concludes.
The Maldives are also mentioned in the report, thanks to the spectacular blend of "curry and coconut palms, silk saris and secluded beaches".
According to the official guide to the Maldives, visitors can look forward to sun, sand and sea, a thousands 'Robinson Crusoe' islands and massive lagoons, among other paradisiacal pleasures.
Croatia, in its own way, is an equally magnificent honeymoon destination, providing an attractive combination of cultural intrigue and raw natural beauty.
