The Dominican Republic has walked away with the prize for golfing destination of the year, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Awarded by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators, the prestigious prize was announced last night at the International Golf Travel Market's annual get together in Marbella, Spain.
Francisco Javier Garcia, the Dominican Republic's minister of tourism, who accepted the award, said that it marked the arrival of the country on the international scene as the new 'It' destination for golf.
He said: "The DR, blessed with breathtaking countryside and pristine beaches, is home to some of the world's most dramatic and spectacular golf courses designed by legends such as Jack Nicklaus [and] Nick Faldo."
Dominican Republic is not just the world's top golfing destination.
The Caribbean island also boasts over two dozen national parks and offers more extreme sports such as windsurfing and kite-boarding.
