2008 News Archive - Holidays - Dubai marathon breaks records

16 04 2007

It has been announced that if the winner of the men or women's Dubai Marathon 2008 breaks the world road race record, they will earn a bonus of $1 million (£500,000).

This officially makes the event the richest long distance running race in history.

The first prize for both the men's and women's Dubai Marathon 2008 is $250,000 (£125,000), double that of the previous leader, the Chicago Marathon, which offered a prize of $125,000 (£62,800).

Especially attractive to competitors is the fact that all prize money won in Dubai is completely tax free.

The idea of offering the extra incentive to break the world record was that of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai.

In the last few years Dubai has successfully transformed itself into a top tourist destination.

Offering year-round sunshine and a beautiful coast sprinkled with deserted beaches, the emirate has become a playground for the rich and famous.
