13 10 2008

Families visiting Gran Canaria this winter will have the opportunity to attend the "party of the year", when Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Festival kicks off in January.

For three weeks the island will bask in a carnival atmosphere, with a number of exciting events scheduled to take place.

According to events website whatsonwhen.com, visitors can expect street performances, fireworks displays, parades and bonfires.

Now in its 32nd year, the carnival features more than 40 staged performances, with past performers including Gloria Gaynor and Grace Jones.

Organisers are preparing for an influx of around 100,000 people, for what is billed as one of the most exciting events of the year.

Located in the north-east of Gran Canaria, the city of Las Palmas is an ideal destination for holidaymakers keen to combine sunbathing and watersports with cultural persist.

With a history dating back to 1478, the area of Vegueta is an official UNESCO World Heritage Site.
