2008 News Archive - Holidays - Foreign holidays are "part of our lives"
08 07 2008
Summer holidays are an essential part of Britons' lives, one commentator has suggested.
According to Sean Tipton of the Association of British Travel Agents, the overseas holiday is seen by the "vast majority" of people as a "necessity".
He added that the current economic downturn is, if anything, a factor more likely to drive holiday bookings.
"Bookings for this summer have been very healthy. People are much more likely to cut back on other aspects of their life rather than forego a summer holiday -especially when we are in a situation which is potentially quite depressing," he observed.
Mr Tipton noted that holidays abroad are a way for families to "escape the current economic gloom".
He added that families with young children would need to be in "extreme financial difficulties" to contemplate not taking an overseas break this year.
