Those who love a good carnival should find exactly the thing in sunny Mexico, where Mazatlan on the Pacific coast puts on a special show.
Held in February (date to be confirmed) the event lasts several days, starting with the coronation of the King of Happiness and then the crowning of the carnival queen, with two major parades on Avenida del Mar among the several highlights of the festival, which dates back to the 19th century.
Naturally enough, there will be large crowds and much merrymaking for this, one of the biggest carnivals in the world, with plenty of sunshine too as visitors can leave behind the grim weather of the British winter and the post-Christmas blues.
With plenty of beaches and beautiful Pacific coastline, Mazatlan offers a fine late winter getaway, with the chance to partake in some water sports when not soaking up the rays.
