2008 News Archive - Holidays - Have a whale of a time

13 08 2007

Environment-lovers are advised to visit South Africa towards the end of September as Hermanus hold its annual Whale Festival.

The event is held to honour the arrival of the southern right whales back to Walker Bay and marks the start of spring for the locals.

Whale watching will of course be on the agenda, as Hermanus claims to be the best destination in the world to watch these enormous waterborne mammals.

Celebrations on land include entertainment by musicians, comedy acts, cabaret as well as African rhythms. And what's more, the crowds of festival-goers are likely to be joined by sports celebrities to welcome the coming of the whales.

According to the organisers of the occasion it is the only enviro-arts festival in the country and also boasts a wealth of arts and craft talent, which can be viewed in galleries and a special craft market.

If this event only whets the appetite for more whale watching, Gansbaai is a location known for the activity. Visitors may also be able to sneak-a-peak at the infamous great white shark while they are there.
