Those who can't mask their enjoyment of a good cultural festival will be able to revel in a treat in Bulgaria in the New Year when just such an event takes place.
Held in the small city of Pernik, not far from the capital city of Sofia, the Surva International Festival of Masquerade Games is a bi-annual festival which returns to life on January 13th and 14th 2008.
The two days see a huge parade of people in fancy dress, with face masks coming to the fore and a panel of judges deciding which ones are best.
Mask-wearing (rep) in this fashion has a deep traditional root, the sporting of them being said to ward off evil sprits, all of which will explain why some of them will look distinctly gruesome.
Visitors to Bulgaria will be able to combine this cultural insight with a visit to the nearby capital and see the development of Sofia as the country settles into the European mainstream.
