Travellers are set to push the boundaries in terms of travel next year, it has been reported.

According to lastminute.com, holidaymakers will travel "further away than ever before" in 2008.

A company spokesperson added that the Maldives will become a popular long-haul destination for travellers next year.

"People are looking at going further away than ever before and we are predicting destinations such as Malaysia and the Maldives but also the States [will be popular]," she commented.

She noted that most people will start to book their summer holidays in January, adding that travellers have started booking their holidays earlier than in the past.

According to the Office for National Statistics roughly 17.2 million UK residents travelled abroad last year.
