10 01 2008

Record numbers of Britons went online to book holidays to places like the Caribbean this Monday, it has been reported.

According to alpharooms.com, there was an 84 per cent rise in bookings compared to the same period in 2007.

He added that Brits booking in January are looking to escape to warmer climes - with the major increases in bookings relating to tropical destinations such as Malaysia, Mexico and the Caribbean.

Meanwhile, Dubai and Singapore are also tipped for popularity in 2008.

"January is traditionally a peak booking time for summer holidays, but Monday saw unprecedented levels of enquiries and bookings," commented Gareth Hockey, alpharooms.com's online marketing manager.

He added: "We believe these record bookings are due to people returning to work and logging onto holiday websites as a way to escape the post–Christmas blues."

Analyst weblog Hitwise Intelligence recently reported that there was a boost in visits to travel companies online websites in the new year.
