2008 News Archive - Holidays - International Iris Competition to hit Florence

03 05 2007

Professional gardeners from all over the world are to flock to Florence from May 7th to the 12th this year to take part in the International Iris Competition.

The city's beautiful Piazzale Michelangelo will host the competition, which is open to visitors and will feature some of the most breathtaking displays of flowers in the world.

Irises from all over the globe will be judged on their shape, aroma, colour and even their resistance to disease.

Many growers will be aiming to capture the most coveted prize of them all, the Fiorino D'oro, awarded to the Iris which most closely resembles the one featured on the city's coat of arms.

Visitors to the city should be sure to visit the Accademia dell'Arte del Disegno, which houses Michelangelo's famous David sculpture and many other historic art pieces.

In addition, the ornate Santa Croce church is also well worth a visit, as it contains the elaborate tombs of Galileo, Michelangelo, Machiavelli and Dante.
