2008 News Archive - Holidays - Italy and US top for city breaks

26 03 2008

Destinations in Italy, such as Rome and Venice, have been listed as being in the top-ten locations for city breaks in 2008.

According to Post Office, New York is also likely to be a popular destination for city breaks this year.

The news comes as Post Office anticipates that demand for city breaks could "explode" in 2008 as the credit crunch kicks in and Britons are less able to afford to splash out on one and two-week holidays.

"After Black Monday many people had to cut back on expenditure and there was a strong growth trend in two or three night short breaks. With a credit crunch widely forecast, UK holidaymakers may well follow the same route this year," Post Office head of travel Helen Warburton observed.

She added that the recent emergence of low cost carriers and the increase in flights from regional airports has made many cities within easy reach of the UK.

Ms Warburton noted that UK holidaymakers have "even more choice" than in the past in terms of city breaks.
