2008 News Archive - Holidays - Maldives "synonymous with honeymooning couples"

14 11 2008

The Maldives are a perfect place for honeymooning couples seeking a romantic getaway, the managers of a recently built resort have found.

Situated in the Indian Ocean, the islands boast lengthy stretches of sand and have "long been synonymous with honeymooning couples enjoying candlelit dinners and strolling moonlit beaches", according to the Iru Fushi beach resort.

But the Maldives also cater for those seeking a more adventurous honeymoon, offering a range of extreme water sports including kite surfing, wakeboarding and big game fishing.

The Maldives is an entirely island nation made up of 1,200 coral atolls, only 200 of which are inhabited.

While the coral that sticks up above the water line provides the basis for the stunning islands, the underwater coral can be more stunning still, as it plays host to "an abundance of marine species including turtles, sharks, barracuda and manta rays".

As such the islands have become something of a mecca for honeymooning couples who fancy trying scuba diving.
