2008 News Archive - Holidays - Mark the almond festival

06 12 2007

Those unfamiliar with Morocco may imagine it to be a land of vast dunes, with nothing but arid sand and a few palm trees.

However, this is far from being the case, with the foliage present including almond trees.

Away from the red desert, the village of Tafraoute holds the title of the almond capital of Morocco, with every February marking the start of the harvest time in spring.

As well as being accompanied by plenty of merrymaking and celebrations, this is a time when the trees are in blossom, providing a colourful contrast to the red-rock backdrop of the surrounding landscape.

Tafraoute is close to the beach resort of Agadir, making it possible to combine the festival with some fine days on the beach, lapping up the Mediterranean waters and enjoying the sun far away from the cold and dark winter days of home.
