2008 News Archive - Holidays - Michael Fish recommends Canary Islands for Winter Sun

05 11 2008

Beloved TV weatherman and national treasure Michael Fish has recommended the Canary Islands for sunny winter breaks in a recent Guardian article.

Fish was "dragged out of retirement" to write about which destinations offered the best guarantees of winter sun and strongly endorsed the Canaries, where "you can expect six hours of sunshine a day and temperatures around 22 degrees C".

He said the Canaries were "an old favourite" of his, and put the Island of La Gomera into his top six winter sun destinations.

Last month, Ignacio Vasallo, director of the Spanish Tourist Office, also praised the Canaries, saying that the islands had always been at the forefront of tourism yet continued to offer great value for money.

Mr Vasallo said the Canaries boasted "warm weather all year round" and "a similarly warm welcome".

Fish's recommendation comes at a time when winter sun holidays are becoming increasingly popular.

Sue Foxall, a travel agent, recommended booking in advance this winter as she told Travelweekly that flights to Spain were "limited" and selling at a premium.
