2008 News Archive - Holidays - Miss World showcases glitz and glamour of South Africa

17 12 2008

The finale of the annual Miss World beauty pageant, which took place earlier this week, showcased the glamour and luxury on offer to tourists who take holidays to South Africa.

Held in Johannesburg, the event was won by Russia's Kseniya Sukhinova, who took the tiara for first prize just ahead of India's Parvathay Omanakuttan and Gabrielle Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago.

The Miss World contestants had previously been on a tour of the country which saw them go on safari and cook traditional Zulu dishes, before the final ceremony where they donned dresses made by South African and Jamaican designers.

Lindiwe Mahlangu, a judge and the chief executive of Johannesburg tourism, said: "I think we have been able to showcase the best of what our country has to offer."

According to Joburg.org, South Africa hosted the event so successfully that Johannesburg has been chosen to host next year's competition as well.
