16 02 2007
Montenegro is promising to capture the hearts of a million tourists this year, confirming its reputation as one of Europe's most exciting destinations.
Citing figures from the Ministry of Tourism, Visit-Montenegro claims that 1.1 million tourists will arrive before the end of 2007, representing a ten per cent increase on the previous year.
Interestingly, it would seem that James Bond has had a hand in the rising popularity of this breathtaking nation. Casino Royale, the critically acclaimed movie starring Daniel Craig, is centred on a high-stakes Texas hold 'em poker tournament in Montenegro, in which James Bond pits his wits against Le Chiffre.
The film highlights some of the country's beautiful scenery and Bond fans from around the world have apparently been convinced that it is well worth a visit.
And with a beautiful coastline, huge lakes, towering mountains and awe-inspiring canyons, a holiday in this fascinating country will certainly provide a lifetime of memories.
Montenegro has endured an extremely turbulent history but is now one of Europe's most welcoming nations. The remnants of unrest are not difficult to find, however, and historic monuments and distinctive architecture ensure the country remains as interesting as it is beautiful.
