12 12 2007

In the new year holidaymakers can get their fix of winter sunshine with the added bonus of a musical backdrop as the Canary Islands host the 24th Annual Music Festival of the Canaries.

One of a limited number of classical music festivals taking place in Europe, the 65 concerts will run from January 10th until March 1st 2008.

Gran Canaria will kick off the schedule at Alfredo Kraus Auditorium in Las Palmas with a performance of Beethoven's Concert No 3 for piano and orchestra.

Pedro Halffter will direct a performance by the Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra with the Children's Choir of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Gran Canaria.

In total Gran Canaria and Tenerife will host 21 concerts, while 22 performances will also be held on the smaller islands of Lanzarote, La Palma, Fuerteventura, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Graciosa.

The festival concludes in Tenerife's Santa Cruz with a performance by the Orchestra of Cadaques and Sir Neville Marriner.

The Canary Islands are made up of seven main islands and six islets and are an autonomous Spanish community.
